After watching some of the life get sucked out of many of our favorite consumer electronics shows with major companies choosing to do their own thing in boutique events in fabulous cities around the world, we had our concerns about the 2013 iteration of Mobile World Congress. The HTC One got a showy New York City launch the week before the event and we already knew that Samsung was holding the Galaxy S IV until later. What's left to see in MWC, then? As it turns out, a heck of a lot.

Pentagon says it will resume F-35 flights

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Thursday it would resume flights of its F-35 fighter jets, which were grounded a week ago after a crack was discovered in an engine of a test plane.

"F-35 flight operations have been cleared to resume," Pentagon spokeswoman Kyra Hawn said.

No additional cracks were found during inspections of engines in the rest of the F-35 fleet or in any spare engines, Hawn said.

Matthew Bates, a spokesman for Pratt & Whitney, which supplies the engines for the planes, said the Pentagon's F-35 program office had decided to lift a temporary suspension of flight operations after it conducted extensive tests on the affected engine part. The tests showed that a crack in a turbine blade stemmed from the "unique operating environment" in flight tests rather than a design flaw, he said.

Bates said Pratt had been working around the clock with Pentagon officials to determine the cause of the crack in the engine blade.

"The team has determined that root cause is sufficiently understood for the F-35 to safely resume flight," Bates said.

The engine in question had operated at high temperatures more than four times longer than a typical F-35 flight, which led to a separation of the "grain boundary" of this particular blade, he said.

Pratt, a unit of United Technologies Corp, supplies the engine for the single-engine, single-seat fighter plane, which is built by Lockheed Martin Corp.

The Pentagon announced the grounding of all F-35 warplanes on Friday after an inspection revealed a crack on a turbine blade in the jet engine of an F-35 being tested at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

It was the second engine-related grounding in two months of the $396 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon's largest weapons program. The Marines Corps version of the plane was grounded for nearly a month starting in mid-January because of a faulty hose in the engine.

How sequester cuts could set back scientific research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF),?Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are among those hit hard by the?sequester cuts that take effect on March 1. ?

An $85-billion across-the-board slash to funding for federal agencies and programs is set to take effect Friday (Mar. 1), and many of the nation's top science agencies will feel the blow.

The cuts, known by the unwieldy term "the sequester," were designed as a last-ditch measure in case Congress couldn't reach a deal to reduce the federal deficit. The cuts were scheduled to take effect Jan. 2, 2013 ? the so-called "fiscal cliff" ? but Congress delayed them until this week.

The cuts apply to both defense and non-defense programs. Non-defense agencies can expect a reduction in funding of about 5 percent, but since that applies to the entire year, it amounts to a cut of more like 9 percent, officials say.

Research agencies will feel the effects particularly keenly. "This is hugely important for everybody who cares about science," Mary Woolley, president of the not-for-profit group Research!America, told LiveScience. [7 Great Dramas in Congressional History]

Who's affected?

The affected agencies include the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA, among others.

The NSF funds about a fifth of all?federally funded basic research?at American colleges and universities, in fields ranging from biology to math and computer science. In response to the sequester cuts, the agency anticipates it will award about 1,000 fewer research grants. This will affect almost 12,000 people, including professors, college students and?K-12 teachers, and could reduce research on clean energy, job-creating advances in manufacturing, cybersecurity efforts and improvements to undergraduate science education, according to a Feb. 4 letter from the NSF to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The NIH, which funds much of the country's biomedical research, will be similarly slammed. The agency will lose an amount of money equivalent to the funding for three major cancer research programs, according to Research!America. Studies that could ultimately drive down the cost of health care, one of the biggest contributors to the deficit, will slow down, Woolley told LiveScience. "It will also potentially add to our national deficit instead of cutting it," Woolley said, adding that the cuts are expected to affect young scientists in particular. The reductions will also impose a nearly $900 million?budget cut on NASA. This will affect the agency's commercial crew program, which is subsidizing human spaceflight systems at Boeing, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Sierra Nevada. The upshot? The United States will become more reliant on other countries for transportation to the International Space Station, according to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Others affected by the cuts include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Cuts to these agencies could affect the nation's ability to monitor threats to public health or approve new drugs.

In December 2012, more than 100 scientific societies signed a letter to the White House and Congress in a plea to avoid the funding cuts. "It is important to recognize that federal research and development (R&D) investments are?not?driving our national deficits," the letter stated. "Placing a significant burden on these crucial areas, as sequestration would do, is nothing less than a threat to national competitiveness."

Sequester cuts will hit defense programs even harder, with a 9 percent funding cut (again, applied to the entire fiscal year)?to all programs except military personnel. Affected entities include research programs like the Defense?Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has funded noteworthy technologies such as computer networking and the development of prosthetic arms.

Not over yet

Currently, government agencies are operating under what's called a "Continuing Resolution," a stopgap measure that will expire March 27. While some agencies have continued to spend the money they were allocated in the?science budget, others are tightening their belts in anticipation of leaner days ahead.

The agencies probably won't be firing people, but there will likely be furloughs (mandatory days of unpaid leave), according to a former congressional budget official who wished to remain anonymous. The furloughs would also apply to contractors, the official said.

Congress must pass legislation later this month once the resolution expires, which could keep the cuts in place, reduce them or even increase the reductions.

"Yes, it's creepy," admits the man who co-created an app that goes through up to six years of your Facebook friends' relationship histories to determine who's ready for a new significant other. "Of course it's creepy!"

"But here's the thing," Anthony Coombs, who created the On The Rebound Facebook app with two friends, continued. "Let's be honest. You meet someone. If you friend them on Facebook, the first thing you do is check their relationship status. You're going to check and see if they are single ... and then creepily troll through their profile."

"Instead of taking the time to do this on a lonely Thursday or Friday .... we'll do this for you," the 32-year-old added, the slightest bit of a smile in his voice.

Coombs came up with the idea for On The Rebound after a missed opportunity. He'd been interested in a girl for the longest time, but she was already in a relationship. "I was the confidant, someone she talked to," he explained. "When the relationship ended, I specifically did not ask her out [...] I'm aware of when people are on the rebound." So he waited for his romantic interest to be ready for a new relationship.

Unfortunately Coombs waited too long. "I'm not sure how long I waited," he said, "but during this time she ended up hooking up with a guy I knew and they're still together."

When Coombs shared the tale with his friend Jon Tran, the latter immediately started wondering about how someone could use data to figure out when people are most likely to enter a relationship. Together with designer Taylor Lecroy, the two started working on an app the same night.

Over the course of the next two-and-a-half months, the men interviewed relationships experts across the country to figure out how age and gender affect relationships. "People of different ages, who are at different stages in life, react differently to relationships ending," Coombs explained, "and relationship length matters, too."

On The Rebound sifts through relationship data when you connect it to your Facebook account and then it spits out a detailed breakdown of your friends' romantic histories. How long have they been single? Have they had a large number of relationships in the last year? How long does it take, on average, before they jump from one to the next? Based on all this information and some magical formulas, On The Rebound can assign "Rebound Ratings" to your pals and offer advice. "Hopefully he's moved on from his ex by now," the app might point out regarding one friend. "Trust me, he's using you," it might say about another "Use him back!"

Of course, as a disclaimer on the On The Rebound website cautions, the app "is for entertainment purposes only" ? so be careful about following all of its advice to the letter.

Why Eurozone's Problems Are Headed for America

Eurozone?s Problems Are HeadedIt?s more of the same overseas in Europe. When you have 17 different countries with their own political and economic systems come together to form the eurozone, you know there will be problems. The concept of the euro makes sense?to allow the seamless flow of goods and services through this region of 500 million people. Unfortunately, it has not been smooth sailing since the beginning of the euro in 1999. About six of the eurozone?s member countries are in a recession.

The problem is that the global economy is so interconnected that problems in the eurozone will impact economies around the world, including the United States and China.

We saw the fiasco with Greece, as the poor country with massive debt problems had to ask for two separate tranches of emergency loans just to stay afloat and avoid a default.

Then there?s Spain, an equally beautiful country like Greece, but one that?s also struggling in light of massive unemployment (26% in the fourth quarter), pressured by massive debt overload. Spain has yet to receive emergency capital, but the country?s banks were forced to take some funding. The risk with Spain is that it?s the 12th-largest economy in the world, so failure here would be disastrous. The country is in the midst of a double-dip recession with gross domestic product (GDP) growth estimated to contract 1.3% in 2013, down from the previous 1.8% growth, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). And now we have Italy, the third-largest country in the eurozone, which just finished its national election with a hung parliament. The problem is that the lack of leadership and political stability in Italy comes at a critical time, when the country must deal with its massive national debt and low growth. The concern is that problems in Italy would cause more havoc.

The eurozone financial crisis is still around; the market just pushed it aside for the election, fiscal cliff, and earnings, but the problem overseas is not going away. Consumer confidence in the eurozone came in at a muddled -23.6 in December, according to the European Commission. The media is stressing how the numbers have improved from the -26.5 in December; I?m not sure about you, but I think the reading is still awful.

At the same time, a major issue is the super high unemployment rate encompassing the eurozone. In the region, unemployment was 11.8%, or about 18.8 million people, in November?the highest number since the beginning of the eurozone in 1999. Add in the massive debt loans and pressure to cut spending, and you?ll realize why I continue to be deeply concerned.

Of course, the mess in the weaker eurozone countries is driving down growth in France and Germany, the two pillars holding up the eurozone. France is finding things are getting more difficult, as the eurozone tries to dig itself out of its financial mess. Capital Economics suggests France and Germany may face another recession in 2013.

So as an investor, I would avoid Europe; but you also need to watch how the financial mess in the eurozone impacts other key global economies, including China and the United States.
