ORONO, Maine ? University of Maine men?s basketball head coach Ted Woodward has announced the signing of Garet Beal to a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Maine in the Fall of 2013 and play on the men?s basketball team.
?This is a very exciting day for our program and its future,? said Woodward. ?Garet Beal has been a fantastic young man and player we have been following since the beginning of his high school career. He has a great work ethic, and is an extremely versatile player with tremendous potential as a college player. It has been a pleasure recruiting him, and I have enjoyed the relationships that we have established with Garet?s family and the entire Jonesport- Beals community. Furthermore, he is a product of great tradition at Jonesport-Beals, and the Maine MAC Basketball Program. They have prepared him well for his outstanding college experience that lies ahead. We are proud to have him as a Black Bear and we are eagerly looking forward to his career with us.?
Beal, a 6-5 200 lbs. guard, led his Jonesport-Beals team to its first Maine class ?D? state championship since 1993 last season. He was named the state?s Gatorade Player of the Year, becoming just the second underclassmen to ever receive the award along with being named first team all-state. He averaged 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.8 steals, 3.6 assists and 1.6 blocks per game while also earning Eastern Maine Tournament Most Valuable Player honors last season.
The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
