Bomb in Afghan market kills 2 children

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Afghan government says a bomb has exploded in an open-air market in eastern Afghanistan, killing two small children.

The governor's office for Khost province says in a statement that the bomb was hidden under a stall in the main bazaar in Sabari district. It went off Wednesday while a group of police officers were passing by. The statement says no police officers were affected, though another four civilians were wounded in the blast.

Wall Street flat ahead of Fed after GDP shock

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were little changed on Wednesday as data showing the economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter was offset by upbeat parts of the report and strong results from Boeing and Amazon.

Economists stressed that the 0.1 percent contraction in U.S. gross domestic product, caused partly by a plunge in government spending and lower business inventories, is not an indicator of recession.

"Inventories came down and that subtraction is actually positive for the private sector," said Jim Russell, chief equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Cincinnati.

"A lot of the important components going forth are there, like consumption by individuals and capital spending, and they are looking strong."

Wall Street opened slightly higher despite the GDP data, with traders awaiting a statement from the Federal Reserve after its two-day policy-setting meeting. The Fed is expected to keep monetary policy on a steady, accommodative path, though debate continues over when it should curtail its bond-buying program.

The S&P 500 held above 1,500, seen by technical analysts as an inflection point that will determine the overall direction in the near term. The index is on track to post its best month since October 2011 and its best January since 1997.

"This is a very modest pullback after a steep run," said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management in New York.

"It is too soon for the Fed to start talking about the end of (their bond buying program); the economy needs stimulus to sustain this recovery."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 0.27 points or 0 percent, to 13,954.69, the S&P 500 <.spx> lost 1.04 points or 0.07 percent, to 1,506.8 and the Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> dropped 0.11 points or -0 percent, to 3,153.55.

Both Boeing Co and Amazon.com shares gained after earnings beat expectations, continuing a trend this quarter of high-profile names advancing after results.

Amazon rose 5.4 percent to $274.40 and Boeing rose 1.2 percent to $74.54.

Thomson Reuters data showed that of the 192 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings this season 68.8 percent have been above analyst expectations, which is a higher proportion than over the past four quarters and above the average since 1994.

Chesapeake Energy rose 6.5 percent to $20.20 a day after it said Aubrey McClendon would step down as chief executive. The last year has been marked by civil and criminal probes into the second-largest U.S. natural gas producer.

Research In Motion shares fell 5.7 percent to $14.76 after the company, which is changing its name to BlackBerry, unveiled a long-delayed line of smartphones in hopes of a comeback into a market it once dominated.

Giving the market extra support, private sector employment topped forecasts with the ADP National Employment report showing 192,000 jobs added in January, higher than the 165,000 expectation.

Hakim: Samsung Tak Meniru Desain Apple Secara Sengaja

WILL F&#K FOR FAMILY: Why I Only Date Dudes With Big ... - xoJane

Before this gets too self-pitying, I would like to say that, as far as families go, I consider myself pretty lucky. My mom is this lovable mash-up of "Xena: Warrior Princess" and a puppy (personality-wise) and Anne Hathaway and Lauren Graham (looks-wise).?

She?s always been incredibly supportive, even when I?m like, ?Hey, mom, by the by, I?m writing about my sex and personal life on the Internet now! Also, could you maybe spot me a $20? Two? Two $20s?? Her parents, my grandparents, are also lovely.

And I guess that?s pretty much it for my family, if you?re defining family as I do: people you are a) related to, who b) make even the slightest effort to get in touch with you on a semi-regular basis.?

image

When your Thanksgiving is this intimate, you can take like seven grainy selfies and no one will make fun of you.

I mean, I have family members. But I also have awful daddy issues -- and for good reason -- which kind of screw up everything else. I?ve recently stepped waaay far-the-fuck back from my relationship with my dad after 20 years of scavenging for his attention (?Approval seeking,? mm-hmm?ed my shrink).?

Beyond him, and scattered across the eastern seaboard and the west coast, there are aunts and uncles and cousins and another grandma. Over the past few years especially, I?ve cut some of those family members out, or out-ish, of my life. This is not, in fact, because I am an ungrateful dick, but because my relationships with them were kind of toxic, and toxicity is contagious, kids!?

It took a long, long time for me not to feel selfish saying the following: My ever-fragile mental health and happiness have, have, have?to come first, and sometimes, that means making painful decisions. Like ostracizing yourself from people with whom you share memories and genetic material.

As for the rest of my family, I?ve lost touch with them for various reasons: resentment over the cutting-people-out thing, forgotten thank-you notes, geography, other family dynamics so very, very far out of my control and, MY GOD, this is getting depressing.

The problem with all this, of course, is that I don?t particularly enjoy?black sheepin?. I grew up watching family-oriented sitcoms, ya know? Mary-Kate-and Ashley everything! And who am I even supposed to play multiplayer board games with, or do whatever it is that families do?

Also, none of my friends are only children because, well, who wants to hang out with only children, especially only children like me who morosely nag people into, like, museum trips because MY DAD MAY OR MAY NOT LOVE ME, OKAY? Which is to say, my friends are great, but they don?t really get it, and besides, they all have their own families for family-type things.

So what?s a college-aged and sometimes lonely only child to do??

Why, seduce a guy with a big...?

huge...?

thick...?

FAMILY, of course! (Penis.)

Not only have I never even casually dated an only child, but everyone I?ve ever dated has had a sizeable nuclear family, and a whopping extended family to boot. And these fellas of mine have always been family men, and their families have always been close. Thanks to the Internet, I benefit from this.?

I am Facebook friends with my boyfriend?s parents and aunts and what-have-yous, and I ?Like? their shit prolifically. I tweet at his cousins. I follow his little sister on Instagram. HI, GUYS, HEY DO YOU WANT TO HANG OUT?

To clarify, it?s not like I actively avoid dating men with small families. That would make for a cumbersome screening process, and, ?I would never date/be attracted to such-and-such kind of person,? is not, in my opinion, a sound way to draw guidelines for your romantic life. Like, yeah, a serial killer isn?t ideal, but so many hot ones! Why would you limit yourself like that?!

No, all right, never serial killers ever, but you know. Open minds!

image

The most pathetic-looking photo I took of myself while tagging along to someone else?s family outing. There were several to choose from.

So far, I?ve just been lucky, glomming onto my boyfriends? families with very little planning necessary. And, again, it?s by chance that these families have always been at least?three times larger than my own.

Mostly, this is a great thing.?

The big sister I always wanted? Supplied by an ex. Fourth of July barbeques, sporting events, family beach trips? Check, check, and check. Buying the FAMILY-SIZED bag of Tostitos on a supermarket run -- well, you just can?t understand how exciting that is to an only child.?

?Eh, this sounds like standard girlfriend stuff, and in no way belies an unusually desperate need for love and acceptance,? you say??

One recent summer, when I was living in New York, I spent an entire paycheck on a flight to North Carolina to tag along on a family beach vacation with a guy I had been officially dating for approximately three weeks. It was a successful weekend, complete with me downing about seven glasses of white wine and belting that Journey song alongside Barely Boyfriend?s nine-year-old cousin on Karaoke Night.

What I?m trying to say is, you know it?s kind of weird when there is an AIRPLANE involved (and it?s not like I make bank as a student journalist) when you were getting introduced as, ?And this is his friend from school, Rebecca,? not a month before. Also, everything is kind of weird when you?re pretty drunk and singing karaoke with a nine-year-old.

For the most part, courting dudes? families has been working pretty well for me. I manage to build up enough shared memories with the fam that I don?t feel like an outsider, and I make note of all the important anecdotes (peeing-themselves stories, weird-injury stories, etc.) so I can chuckle knowingly along when they are referenced. Of course, it helps that I?m a serial monogamist.

But the breakups -- agh, the breakups. Not only do I lose my boyfriend, who invariably doubles as my best friend and the major male figure in my life (because, yeah, daddy issues). No, worse than that, I lose my much-beloved fake family, too.?

There is withdrawal. There are dismayed text messages, and then there are no text messages, which are even more dismaying. You will want to send a Christmas card, but you cannot.?

You block 17 people with the same last name on Facebook. And then you?re not only grieving over your ex (and grieving it is, because ?you? here is me, and I haven?t figured out how to ?just be friends? after a breakup), but you?re also mourning the loss of your ex?s siblings (YOUR siblings, you think selfishly) and parents (also yours) and dog (yours, except when it needed to be walked).?

You get really sad and listen to sad songs while eating entire bowls of brownie batter. SAD brownie batter.

Suddenly, it gets better.?

You?re not sure why today is different from the day before, but you can feel it -- you?re starting to move on. A few weeks later, you start to fall for someone new. He mentions his sister and brother.?

You get the sense that his parents are still happily married (it?s that well-adjusted glow in his eyes!) and press him for details. Subtly. He alludes to rowdy vacations, holiday parties.?

Over his apartment one night, for dinner, you comment, not too?eagerly, that his family sounds lovely. He smiles and poses THE question: ?Maybe you?d like to meet them sometime??

At your next therapy session, you are chirping with glee. ?I?ve healed,? you announce triumphantly.?

One week later, you friend his mom on Facebook.?

Rebecca is on Twitter @rebsanti tweeting this article at her boyfriend?s cousin.

Mali rebels torch ancient library in Timbuktu

Thousands of residents came out to celebrate after French and Malian troops entered the town of Gao on Sunday, with a parade of motorbikes honking their horns and people weeping in disbelief. Lindsey Hilsum of the UK's Channel 4 News reports.

By Adama Diarra and Richard Valdmanis, Reuters

GAO, Mali -- French and Malian troops on Monday sealed off Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but fleeing Islamist rebel fighters torched several buildings in the ancient Saharan trading town, including a library of priceless manuscripts.

Without a shot being fired to stop them, 1,000 French soldiers including paratroopers and 200 Malian troops seized the airport and surrounded the centuries-old Niger River city, looking to block the escape of al-Qaida-allied fighters.

The retaking of Timbuktu followed the swift capture by French and Malian forces at the weekend of Gao, another major northern Malian town which had also been occupied by the alliance of Islamist militant groups since last year.

A two-week intervention by France in its former Sahel colony, at the request of Mali's government but also with wide international backing, has driven the Islamist rebel fighters northwards out of towns into the desert and mountains.

A French military spokesman said the assault forces at Timbuktu were being careful to avoid combat inside the city so as not to damage cultural treasures and mosques and religious shrines in what is considered a seat of Islamic learning.

But Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, reported that fleeing Islamist fighters had torched a South African-funded library in the city containing thousands of priceless manuscripts.

A French soldier in Mali on Sunday.

"The rebels set fire to the newly constructed Ahmed Baba Institute built by the South Africans ... this happened four days ago," Halle Ousmane told Reuters by telephone from Bamako. He said he had received the information from his chief of communications who had traveled south from the city a day ago.

Ousmane was not able to immediately say how much the concrete building had been damaged. He added the rebels also torched his office and the home of a member of parliament.

The Ahmed Baba Institute, one of several libraries and collections in the city containing fragile ancient documents dating back to the 13th century, is named after a Timbuktu-born contemporary of William Shakespeare and houses more than 20,000 scholarly manuscripts. Some were stored in underground vaults.

'Free as the wind'
The French and Malians have faced no resistance so far at Timbuktu, but they face a tough job of combing through the labyrinth of ancient mosques and monuments and mud-brick homes between alleys to flush out any hiding Islamist fighters.

"We have to be extremely careful. But in general terms, the necessary elements are in place to take control," French army spokesman Lieutenant Thierry Burkhard said in Paris.

Timbuktu member of parliament El Hadj Baba Ha?dara told Reuters in Bamako the Islamist rebels had abandoned the city. "They all fled. Before their departure they destroyed some buildings, including private homes," he said.

The United States and European Union are backing the French-led Mali operation as a strike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the West African state's inhospitable Sahara Desert as a launch pad for international attacks.

In the first installment of Rock Center's Hidden Planet series, Richard Engel travels to Mali, on the edge of the Sahara desert, to discover the city of Timbuktu.

They are helping with intelligence, airlift of troops, refueling of planes and logistics, but do not plan to send combat troops to Mali.?

In Gao, crowds celebrated the arrival of French forces. Many smoked cigarettes, women went unveiled and some men wore shorts to flout the severe Shariah Islamic law the rebels had imposed for months. Youths on motorcycles flew the flags of Mali, France and Niger, whose troops also helped secure the ancient town on the Niger River.

"Now we can breathe freely," said Hawa Toure, 25, wearing a colorful traditional African robe banned under Shariah for being too revealing. "We are as free as the wind today. We thank all of our friends around the world who helped us," she said.

About a dozen rebels were killed in Gao, while French forces suffered no losses or injuries, the?French defense ministry?said.

Youths in Gao said there were still some rebels and rebel sympathizers around, but they were being found. "Yesterday, even, we found one hiding in a house. We cut his throat," one man said, asking not to be named. "Today we found another and we brought him to the army."

A third northern town, the Tuareg seat of Kidal, in Mali's rugged and remote northeast, remains in rebel hands.

The Simppl Life - The Barre Legacy | 1.2

The next installation of the Barre legacy, the very first family to play through The Board Game Challenge!

Last time with the Barre legacy, our founder Chocolate was hastily married to Skullduggery Jones while on the rebound from her broken engagement with Joshua. Chocolate and Skullduggery immediately dashed off on their honeymoon to Takemizuu, consummated their marriage, and enjoyed a vast amount of pseudo-Asian culture. We left them just as they were returning home.

The lovely souvenirs from their visit to Takemizuu. Though actually, the Maneki Neko cat is one of the things Chocolate initially dug up when looking for a treasure chest. I let her keep it because it was so darn cute. XD Just lucky for me it fit in so well later!

First thing we make Skullduggery do upon coming back home? LEVEL UP HIS COOKING SKILL. I'm not taking any more chances at him burning down the house. :| He was alone only four hours last time before he had the whole kitchen flooded from the sprinkler trying to put out all the flames.

*sigh* I SUPPOSE it's an improvement. The fire sprinkler didn't go off this time, anyway.

What?? What is this? I'm no more pleased to hear from you than Chocolate is, Joshua. You can't just say all those nasty things and dump her, then call her a week later expecting everything to be alright. She's moved on, and you are a nasty little fellow. :P

Doesn't mean Chocolate can't brag about her awesome honeymoon to you though. >_> TELL HIM ABOUT ALL THE THINGS HE MISSED OUT ON, CHOCOLATE. He's a butthead and deserves to feel regret.

Chocolate: *pop* "Oh my god, sweetie! I think... I think I'm pregnant!"
Skullduggery: "Eww... does that mean this puddle is YOURS, and not Klondike's?"
Chocolate: ":| No. No it does not. I'm PREGNANT, not in labor. My water isn't going to break for like, 6 more months. And you would still be on puddle-duty even if it was mine."
Skullduggery: ":( That's not fair."
Chocolate: "I know. :)"

@_@ Such a cute little growing familyyy~~~ It's made a little less cute by the fact that they're all playing around a TOILET, but perhaps Bathtub Sailor Chocolate makes up for that. :3

Aww, poor dear. Pregnancy is so hard on them, isn't it? Though it isn't exactly easy on us, either.

*bouncey bouncey bounce* I am so excited for the first spawn!! I am also really loving my new default PJs. So comfy and slouchy looking. And CUTE. <3

Cuddles. <333 Skullduggery has been a very supportive husband and expecting father; making almost all the meals, and cleaning up the house as best he can. And providing lots and lots of cuddles. :3 All ladies need lots of cuddle, but pregnant ones especially, IMO.

Whoop! It's go-time!! *pats self on back for not having the first birth of the family be in a bathroom*

Chocolate: *births child*
Skullduggery: *yawn* "Hey hon, what you doing up? It's like the middle of the night. Man, I had the weirdest dream. You were being eaten by zombies or something, just screaming and screaming, like you were in the most intense pain EVER."
Chocolate: "NO WAY. No idea why you would have imagined me screaming in agony, nope, none at all. Not because I just gave birth to your first-born or anything. Nothing like that."
Skullduggery: "...what? *turns around* OH SHIT. BABY."

Baby, indeed. Girl baby! This is KitKat Barre, with all of her daddy's genetics, so far as we can tell. I don't mind too much, her dad has awesome genetics!

Always comforting when they're a good parent right off the bat. I always worry about them tripping over their baby for the whole next week if the first thing they do is set it on the floor. :| If they feed it first, they just tend to fare better as parents. So I approve, Chocolate, I definitely approve.

As per this generation's rules, after the birth of each child you've got to decrease how much spending money your family has by $1000 via cheats or buying useless deco items, and I chose useless deco items! So meet Maya and Nayam, everybody, our front door guardians, who both rang in at $505 each.

Ouch. They definitely put a dent in our budget, didn't they?

Also, I know it appears that Chocolate is not so old after all, and I know I put a lot of stress on the fact that she needed to get married and make babies RIGHT AWAY because she'd already been around two weeks, and THAT is because I am using an aging hack for this family. I noticed at the end of the Pokemons that my babies tended to become toddlers and then children in the blink of an eye, so I decided that perhaps extending everyone's lives would help me avoid that. So adults have about 39 days instead of 28, babies and toddlers have a few extra days, and I think children have about an extra week. I don't teens have too much more, since their age span lasted EONS already. :P

Chocolate: "Puddles!! :D :D *splashes happily*"
Klondike: "I get scolded when *I* play in puddles. You called them filthy. This so unfair."
Chocolate: "Puddles!! :D :D *continues to splash*"
Klondike: :|

Well, we're bringing in more money now, but alas no new uniform yet. *dreams of the day*

I figured it was about time for a maid. With all the turkeys Skullduggery keeps making and let rot on the counter, and all the baby bottles souring on the floor, their house was REALLY getting nasty. Chocolate is constantly busy with work, getting the friends and skills she needs to keep getting promoted, and then actually GOING to work the rest of the time. Skullduggery is always busy taking care of KitKat, and it just hasn't left a lot of time to clean. And as a bonus, the maid looks AWESOME.

Birthday for KitKat! Woo! Things happened between her birth and next birthday. I feel pretty accomplished.

~suspense~

EEE! SO CUTES. I love her hair choice. A little edgy for a toddler, but that just makes her all the more badass. I am a little sad she didn't get her mom's ears, but she really is too darn cute for me to hold it against her. <33

Aww. <3 First thing she wanted to do was give Klondike hugs. She appears to know just how to win me over. *suspicious*

Hahaha! Well, being cute with Klondike is bound to win ME over, yes, but I don't think Klondike is going to be too fond of you if you keep stealing his bed.

Skullduggery and Chocolate are very proper parents, and give KitKat all the love and attention she needs, and evenly split teaching the tasks she needs to grow up nice and fulfilled. Skullduggery took walking and nursery rhyme, while Chocolate took talking and potty-training.

Which is either evidenced here, or is just a picture of Chocolate checking out her husband's cute little heinie. You decide.

*sigh* Another promotion, and yet another day stuck in that horrible, borked outfit.

Skullduggery still does some tidying up around the house, even though there is a maid doing the majority of it nowadays, and KitKat.. tries to help? I'm sure she's just emptying the bowl out so her daddy can clean it out. Yup, totally what she's doing.

KitKat: "Kibble confwetti!!"

orrr.. not.

But she's still darn cute, no matter what she does. I seriously can not get enough of her CUTE LITTLE FACE. AUGH. I haven't liked a toddler this much in ages. Probably because I didn't really get to see them very long before I had this aging hack. XD

Chocolate is still being super-career-mommy, networking every night to meet her friend requirements, skilling up when needed, and being VERY enthusiastic about going to work each morning. I know I certainly don't happy-hover MY way to class/work each day. :P

I have NO idea why Skullduggery makes so many goddam turkeys. All the time, turkeys. It's definitely filling, and makes a lot of plates, but...

There are only two people who eat solid food in the house right now. We don't need to be cooking an ENTIRE TURKEY, EVERY DAY. Sometimes it's twice a day!! They just rot, man. So gross and so wasteful. Depleting my fridge so quickly. D:

In other news, everyone loves KitKat and she is still beyond adorable.

:O But what is this?? Possible competition on the way? AWESOME. :3

HALLELUJAH. A DIFFERENT WORK OUTFIT. asdfghjk so excited to have her proper skintone back.

Oh, and she reached the top of her career, too. Neat.

Hello again, Pochi. You haven't been here in a while. I suppose you heard there's another baby on the way? I know the master wolves like to hang around babies/toddlers and pregnant ladies. Kind of alarming, actually. But he's being pretty nice and peaceful for the moment, just sniffing Klondike a bit and getting to know him.

N'aww. I wish the master wolves were adoptable. Pochi would fit right in with everyone. <3

See?? He KNEW there was a baby in there.

But there will be one less toddler around the house pretty soon, because KitKat is growing up fast! But not nearly as fast as my toddlers used to. :3 I really do love my new aging lengths, guys. So much nicer for my playing style. I like to play on speed 3 and 2 a lot, and only pause for exciting things. >_>;;

~suspense~

And of course, she first thing she sets to doing is playing with Klondike. She was just too excited that she could do more than cuddle him now. XD

Goodness. I guess Klondike is going to be one of the few people/animals she's nice to, then. She has only 2 nice points, less than either of her parents, so I have NO idea where that came from. Her personality is actually not the same as either of her parents on ANY of the traits. She's certainly her own person.

Chocolate: "My belly is getting so much bigger! It's so exciting, Skullduggery. :3"
Skullduggery: "Mmm.. my belly is getting bigger, too. So much turkey. Man I love turkey."

We know, Skullduggery, really we do. But the person who knows the most is whoever ends up taking out the garbage, because MY GOODNESS we end up throwing a lot of that stuff away. Even with saving half of it in the fridge as leftovers. I can't get all of them, you make too many! STOP IT.

Skullduggery: "Turkey~~ :3"
