Facebook buying Atlas ad business from Microsoft

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Facebook is buying a set of online advertising tools called Atlas from Microsoft in its latest attempt to build a more effective marketing system around its social network.

In making the deal announced Thursday, Facebook is betting the acquired technology will be more fruitful under new ownership than it was during the past five-and-half years under Microsoft's control. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Atlas is part of an online advertising service called aQuantive, which Microsoft Corp. bought for $6.3 billion in 2007. Aquantive didn't bring in as much online ad revenue as Microsoft envisioned, prompting the software maker to absorb a $6.2 billion charge last year that resulted in its first quarterly loss in its 26-year history as a public company.

Given the magnitude of that writedown, Facebook probably didn't have to pay much to take Atlas off Microsoft's hands. The undisclosed purchase price is a sign that the amount isn't substantial enough to leave a big dent in the company's finances.

Atlas provides monitoring tools that help advertisers assess how their online marketing tools are faring. It helps marketers make adjustments needed to connect people more likely to buy their products and services.

Facebook Inc. already analyzes the interests that people share on its social network to target ads at certain audiences.

Those insights helped Facebook sell $4.3 billion in advertising last year, a 36 percent increase from 2011.

But that wasn't enough to satisfy investors who want Facebook to grow at a faster rate. Wall Street's disappointment with Facebook's performance, particularly in the growing mobile advertising market, has left the company's stock price below the $38 price paid in its initial public offering last May. The shares dipped four cents to $27.21 in extended trading after Facebook announced its acquisition.

Atlas could help Facebook do a better job of using its knowledge about more than 1 billion users to place ads on sites that tether their services to Facebook's social network, according to Forrester Research analyst Nate Elliott.

"The question now is how quickly and successfully Facebook can integrate its data with Atlas' tools, and whether they can avoid a privacy backlash as they do so," Elliott wrote Thursday in a blog post.

Facebook has faced recurring complaints that it disregards personal privacy in its zeal to vacuum up more sensitive data from users and sell more advertising.

The company, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., views Atlas as an "important step" that "will help advertisers to a more complete view of the effectiveness of their campaigns," according to a blog post written by Brian Boland, Facebook's director of product marketing.

Atlas also could help Facebook compete against the array of analytical tools and services that online advertising leader Google Inc. offers to marketers. Google, though, brings in most of its advertising revenue through its dominant Internet search engine, a weapon that Facebook is trying to counter with a recently introduced feature, called Graph Search, which makes it easier for its users to find information within its social network.

Google is expected to attract about 43 percent of the projected $42.5 billion in online ad spending in the U.S. this year, followed by Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft at about 7 percent and Facebook at 6 percent, according the research firm eMarketer.

Google has widened its share from about 31 percent since Microsoft bought Atlas as part of the ill-fated aQuantive acquisition.

Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash. fared much better in the Facebook IPO than it did with the aQuantive acquisition. After investing $240 million in Facebook in 2007, Microsoft reaped a $249 million windfall last year by selling just 20 percent of its holdings in Facebook's IPO.

Caterpillar's signature yellow and black CAT branding was definitely spinning heads and getting passerby's attention as it showed off its rugged B15. As far as tough goes the handset's corners are wrapped in rubber with the connections in between covered with anodized aluminum. The B15 is IP67 certified, which means both protected from dust and waterproof up to 3.3 feet for 30 minutes and can be dropped from about six feet and live to tell the tale -- you, however, may not. Other notables include a 4-inch WVGA display, dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 and a 5-megapixel camera that'll shoot 720p video and can do continuous pic shooting.

Sadly, we forgot our rubber mallet at home so we couldn't try to beat it to pieces but we did appreciate the housing on the CAT phone it's surprisingly nice to hold and well put together. Sure, there's a wee bit of overkill with the tough machine branding, but we're sure this phone will garner a bit of a following. Our favorite bit? The Caterpillar phone features something called wet finger tracking, so even if you happen to fall into a deep puddle while using your B15, you can finish whatever you were up to before tumbling. The B15 ships in March for a cool $436, though, there's no word on what carrier's planning to scoop this up -- see what we did there? World's largest turtle faces extinction in 20 years

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The giant Pacific leatherback turtle, known for its arduous 6,000-mile ocean trek from the U.S. West Coast to breeding grounds in Indonesia, could go extinct within 20 years as its population continues to plummet, scientists say.

"Sea turtles have been around about 100 million years and survived the extinction of the dinosaurs but are struggling to survive the impact of humans," said reproductive biologist Thane Wibbels of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a member of a research team studying the fate of these reptiles.

The leatherback ? the world's largest turtle ? can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds.

A study published this week in the Ecological Society of America's scientific journal Ecosphere estimates that only about 500 leatherbacks now nest at their last large nesting site in the Pacific, down from thousands previously. The study tracked the turtle's ongoing population decline since the 1980s.

"If the decline continues, leatherback turtles will become extinct in the Pacific Ocean within 20 years," Wibbels said.

The Pacific leatherback braves a transpacific journey that is one of the longest migrations in nature. Experts say its continued existence is imperiled by threats like climate change, plastic pollution, fishing methods, predation and human hunting.

In the past 27 years, the numbers of western Pacific leatherback turtles have dropped by 78 percent, making it critically endangered, said Ricardo Tapilatu, a turtle researcher at UAB and the State University of Papua in Indonesia. He has studied the turtles at their last remaining refuge, the remote Bird's Head Peninsula on New Guinea.

More than 75 percent of all western Pacific leatherback nesting occurs there, numbering 489 turtles in the last breeding season, the researchers said. The turtles forage across the Pacific as far away as the U.S. coast of California, Oregon, and Washington state.

The research team also included scientists from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service and the World Wildlife Fund Indonesia.

The turtles can dive as deep as 4,000 feet. To survive the cold depths, the leatherback can control its temperature, staying warmer than surrounding waters. They feed on jellyfish, eating hundreds a day.

The leathery shell feels like tire tread and it is distinctively different from hard-shell sea turtles.

Their exact lifespan is unknown, but is believed to be up to 80 years. It is difficult to determine since males never return to the beaches, living their lives in the sea.

Of the four primary Pacific nesting places of the past century, the Malaysian population is extinct, and the Mexico and Central American populations have fallen 95 percent.

The leatherback is the only sea turtle that lives in open ocean, negotiating numerous dangers along the way.

"They migrate 6,000 miles in seven months, and then back, going through the territorial waters of at least 20 countries. There is constant danger of being caught and killed," said Tapilatu, a native of New Guinea.

For example, fishermen's drift nets and long-lines can snag the air-breathing turtle, drowning it. Humans also introduced wild hogs and dogs to the remote beaches where they nest. The hogs are especially voracious predators of turtle eggs.

Near the nesting site, local fishermen still capture and slaughter leatherbacks to consume the meat. A local tribe has historically harvested about 100 turtles per year, as well as eggs.

On some beaches, as few as 20 percent of the eggs hatch due to increased beach temperatures, which could worsen with climate change, Tapilatu said. Sand temperature determines the gender of hatchlings, with higher temperatures favoring females.

There is hope of restoring the population of the endangered reptiles, the researchers said. The Atlantic leatherback, which is genetically different from the Pacific turtles, has made a comeback through mutual country agreements to ban harvesting adults or eggs on beaches.

Tapilatu said he plans to return to New Guinea to help replicate that success story with the leatherback turtles struggling to survive in his Pacific home.

Google Docs is a great service, especially for students. Not only can you use it to store PDFs, but you can use it to create and store documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Students taking copious notes from classes and books can benefit greatly from Google Docs because of its ease of use, online storage, and search functionality.

For example, when working with any book or article, you are bound to write down a note. If you can type instead of write, then you have the ability to record your notes without fear of losing paper or files on your computer.

Here is one method of taking and storing notes for future accessibility.

First, always put a bibliographic reference at the top of the page.

Next, use bullet points for the notes or quotes, always leaving page numbers in parentheses. Here are the first two notes and quotes from the article.

The goal is to leave a breadcrumb trail for yourself. Even though you may take notes today, it does not mean you will not need them in the future. By following the examples above, you can find the notes by searching your Google Docs for something as simple as ?medieval.?

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly is entering the final chapter of a three-year contract that he signed in 2010. So it?s time to start printing more pages.

According to beat writer Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, Dodgers officials have spoken to Mattingly recently ?about a new contract,? though there?s no hurry to get anything done this spring.

NYT: Barnes & Noble may be moving away from Nook hardware

Barnes & Noble's hardware division hasn't exactly been glowing recently, and if one New York Times source is to be believed, it'll take more than cute (and charitable) rhymes to keep investors happy. According to the NYT source, company executives want to shift from making Barnes & Noble branded hardware to licensing its content to other manufactures. "They are not completely getting out of the hardware business, but they are going to lean a lot more on the comprehensive digital catalog of content," the paper was told. The source went on to explain that the company will emphasize this new strategy in its Q3 2013 fiscal report next week, committing to building deeper relationships with device makers like Samsung and Microsoft. The unnamed informant didn't say which devices the bookseller planned to shelve, but we wouldn't be too surprised to see the more expensive SKUs fall by the wayside. Either way, we'll see the facts for themselves when the company posts its earnings next week.

Update: Barnes & Noble followed up with us to clarify the situation, stating plainly that it has "no plans to discontinue our award-winning line of Nook products."

It's official: Samsung's got a new 8-inch Note tablet

The rumors you might've heard are true: Samsung's got a new 8-inch tablet, appropriately named the Galaxy Note 8.0, on the way.

The new tablet will sit between the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 smartphone and the 10.1-inch Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. It competes with Apple's 7.9-inch iPad Mini and Google's 7-inch Nexus 7.

Like the other devices in Samsung's Galaxy Note line, the Galaxy Note 8.0 will include the S Pen, which Samsung emphasizes is not merely a stylus. You can use the pressure-sensitive digital pen ? which is powered by technology created by Wacom, the company behind professional-grade digital drawing tablets ? to add notes, manipulate content on the screen, and even preview videos and emails by simply hovering it close to the Galaxy Note 8.0's screen.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 will run Android 4.1.2 (better known as Jellybean). Under the hood, it has a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, a 5 megapixel camera in the back, a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front, 2GB of RAM, and a microSD slot. The tablet's 8-inch display offers 1280x800 pixels, which breaks down to 189 pixels per inch (ppi). (In comparison, the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 have 163 ppi and 216 ppi displays, respectively.)

Those who were intrigued by the Galaxy Note 10.1's multi-app split-screen feature will likely jump for joy when they hear that it is included on the Galaxy Note 8.0 and that it now supports nearly any app ? not just Samsung's included suite of tools. (This means that you can take notes while watching a video, type out emails while editing a spreadsheet on the side, scribble over a photo while checking out instructions in a document, and so on.)

The Galaxy Note 8.0 will come in 16GB and 32GB versions. No word yet on pricing details, but since we should see the tablet hit shelves in the second quarter of this year, it won't be too long before we find out how much Samsung wants for its latest gadget.

Iran says it has captured a foreign 'enemy drone'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard said Saturday that it captured a foreign unmanned aircraft during a military exercise in southern Iran.

Gen. Hamid Sarkheili, a spokesman for the military exercise, said the Guard's electronic warfare unit spotted signals indicating that foreign drones were trying to enter Iranian airspace. Sarkheili said Guard experts took control of one drone's navigation system and brought it down near the city of Sirjan where the military drills began on Saturday.

"While probing signals in the area, we spotted foreign and enemy drones which attempted to enter the area of the war game," the official IRNA news agency quoted the general as saying. "We were able to get one enemy drone to land."

Sarkheili did not say whether the drone was American.

Iran has claimed to have captured several U.S. drones, including an advanced RQ-170 Sentinel CIA spy drone in December 2011 and at least three ScanEagle aircraft.

State TV said the Guard's military exercise, code-named Great Prophet-8, involved ground forces of the Guard, Iran's most powerful military force. State TV showed tanks and artillery attacking hypothetical enemy positions. He said various systems, including unmanned planes that operate like suicide bombers, were tested.

"Reconnaissance as well as suicide drones, which are capable of attacking the hypothetical enemies, were deployed and their operational capabilities were studied," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

Google?s Brin, Facebook?s Zuckerberg Help Fund $3 Million Science Awards

The life sciences awards, which will recognize research aimed at curing intractable human diseases, are being sponsored by some technology kingpins.

Leaders from Google, Facebook and Mail.ru Group have come together to fund five $3 million prizes annually for innovations in life sciences research around the world to fight stubborn human diseases.
The new awards program, the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, is being organized by the nonprofit foundation of the same name, according to a Feb. 20 announcement. The founding organizers of the new group include Google Co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki; Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan; and Yuri Milner, founder of Mail.ru Group. Apple Board Chairman Art Levinson has been named as the chairman of the board for the foundation.
Eleven life science prizes of $3 million each are being awarded in the first round of annual awards in the program?s inaugural year of 2013, while in future years five annual $3 million prizes will be handed out annually. The foundation itself is ?dedicated to advancing breakthrough research, celebrating scientists and generating excitement about the pursuit of science as a career,? according to the group.
?I am delighted to announce the launch of the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and welcome its first recipients,? Levinson said in a statement. ?I believe this new prize will shine a light on the extraordinary achievements of the outstanding minds in the field of life sciences, enhance medical innovation and ultimately become a platform for recognizing future discoveries.?

Milner, of the Mail.ru Group, had previously created a similar Fundamental Physics Prize program in 2012 to award $3 million annual prizes for scientific breakthroughs, according to his Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation.

Following are the winners of the first 11 $3 million prizes from the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Foundation:
Cornelia I. Bargmann, the Torsten N. Wiesel Professor and head of the Lulu and Anthony Wang Laboratory of Neural Circuits and Behavior at Rockefeller University, for work involving the genetics of neural circuits and behavior, and synaptic guidepost molecules.

Images of next Apple iPad case leaks, suggests slimmer body and thinner bezels

Apple is already working on its next generation iPad and the design has allegedly already leaked in China. As a result we get these images of a case, which is supposedly a custom fit for the upcoming fifth generation of the iPad. The popular accessory maker MiniSuit claims to have got the specifications and the design from a reliable source.

Judging by the case, the next-generation iPad will have a design, which is very much alike that of the iPad mini. The slate should have a narrower design with thinner bezels on either side of the display.

Apple?s iPad in the making will feature the microphone at the back of the device unlike its fourth-generation iPad, which had the microphone on the top. Apple?s rumored iPad is expected to launch in the month of June but as usual take all this with a grain of salt.

I recently assisted with organising my dear friends' baby shower.? I have never been to a baby shower before, so to be part of the organisation was something I was really looking forward to.? I wanted to share the overall experience and some pictures from the day since having a family is a natural step once married (or before too!).? I took the opportunity to be photographer for the day, a passion I have missed from pursuing my other interests.

My friend decided on a vintage inspired theme.?? The colour theme was going to be aqua and watermelon, which was a gorgeous modern spin on baby pink and blue.? With her family home having the most divine front yard, and being summer, she decided on a picnic style theme.? We gathered picnic blankets, stools and small tables to give the guests a relaxed space and atmosphere to enjoy the celebration.? The front yard has a few trees, so we strung up lanterns and decorations in the trees which created the perfect vintage feel.

The food was definitely a highlight, along with the food styling.? I was excited, as I made cupcakes for the event, which is is a favourite hobby of mine.? I have two other posts, which include my love for cupcake making!? Unfortunately I was unable to find watermelon and aqua cupcake holders, but I substituted this with gorgeous baby pink and blue holders.? Watermelon and mint punch was served in beautiful glass jars with striped straws.? Guests had the option to bring a plate of food, which was placed on a large trestle table covered with a delightful red and white polka dot tablecloth.? Watermelon was cut into wedges and served, which added a burst of colour and a refreshing treat on such a hot day.

??

Picnic blankets were perfect for little ones to crawl around on and bean bags were placed under umbrellas to enjoy.? After the food and drink we all gathered to enjoy present opening time.? Guests had purchased the most beautiful gifts and the newborn will be such a stylish little girl!? It was lovely to see how much thought had gone into choosing presents.

With the celebration over, I can now confidently help organise baby showers!? Event management is something I love, be it weddings, birthdays or baby showers.? The fun and excitement of arranging it, followed by being part of such special occasions always brings me joy.

Gas prices spike across California

LOS ANGELES ? It's still February, but California gas prices are springing forward.

The average price of gasoline in the region saw one of the largest one-month leaps since 2000, the Automobile Club of Southern California said Friday. Statewide, the average price of regular gasoline was $4.22, up 12 cents from last week.

Gas prices have spiked between 57 and 59 cents over the past 30 days. The region's largest increase was 70 cents between May and June 2008.

Auto Club officials said the surge can't be attributed to a single factor, but refineries were expected to undergo a heavy maintenance schedule, and large amounts of money have been plowed into contracts speculating that the price of gas and oil will go up.

Californians, however, are used to seeing a hefty price at the pump and might be resigned to paying $4 or more for a gallon of gas.

?We've done this before,? said Auto Club spokeswoman Marie Montgomery. ?It's definitely not good for consumers.?

Last year, for instance, Californians were paying more than $4 a gallon, but there was a slower rise in prices.

Prices in Southern California now nearly match the highest cost for a gallon in the nation, which can be found on Maui. The average price of regular gasoline in the Los Angeles area was $4.316 per gallon Friday; the price in Wailuku, Hawaii, was $4.399.

The price in Los Angeles is 11.3 cents more than last week and 57 cents higher than last month. In San Diego, the average price is $4.285, which is an increase of 10.2 cents from last week and 58 cents from last month.

In San Francisco, the price is $4.22. A week ago, it was $4.08. That price has gone up 56 cents from a month ago.

Montgomery said she bought gas Thursday, and even after a discount, she paid $4.08 per gallon.

?And I should be happy with that?? she said, laughing. ?It's frustrating.?

New breast cancer treatment approved

(CNN) -

A drug that presents a new way to knock out cancer cells was approved Friday to treat patients with a certain type of late-stage metastatic breast cancer.

The drug, referred to as T-DM1 during clinical research, will now be known by the brand name Kadcyla, the Food and Drug Administration said in its approval announcement. It's a new therapy for women with HER2-positive breast cancer.

Kadcyla is a combination of the targeted drug trastuzumab -- better known by the brand name Herceptin -- and a powerful chemotherapy drug called DM1. It's designed to work when Herceptin alone can no longer keep cancer in check.

DM1 is too toxic to deliver directly into a patient's bloodstream, like other chemotherapy drugs. The Herceptin part of the new drug homes in on cancer cells, sparing other healthy cells, and delivers DM1 into the cell.

"Kadcyla delivers the drug to the cancer site to shrink the tumor, slow disease progression and prolong survival," said Dr. Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a statement. The drug is the fourth approved to target the HER2 protein.

Genentech, the company that developed the drug, is working to get it to patients "imminently," said spokesman Susan Willson. "As soon as humanly possible, but within two weeks at the outside."

Kadcyla will cost about $9,800 monthly, which Willson said is "similar to the cost of other treatment regimens in this line of therapy." The estimated cost of a course of Kadcyla -- 9? months -- is about $94,000.

But "we want to ensure that people who are eligible for this medicine have access to it," Willson said. Genentech plans to initiate patient assistance programs for the drug to help those who might not be able to afford it; those without health insurance or those who have reached the lifetime limit set by their insurance companies may qualify to receive Kadcyla for free.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, according to the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HER2 is a protein involved in normal cell growth. It's found in increased amounts on some types of cancer cells. In HER2-positive breast cancers, the increased amount of the protein contributes to cancer call growth and survival. Nearly 20% of breast cancers have increased amounts of HER2.

Researchers announced the results of a large three-year clinical trial of Kadcyla in June, saying they were optimistic about it. One significant benefit, according to lead study author Dr. Kimberly Blackwell of Duke University, is the lack of significant side effects and a better quality of life for patients on the drug.

Patients participating in the trial, she said, were the first group for whom officials worried about fixing their hair for media interviews.

Kadcyla, known as an "antibody-drug conjugate," represents "a completely new way" to treat HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer, said Dr. Hal Barron, chief medical officer and head of global product development for Genentech.

An antibody-drug conjugate is described by the company as "a new kind of targeted medicine that can attach to certain types of cells and deliver chemotherapy directly to them."

"We currently have more than 25 antibody-drug conjugates in our pipeline and hope this promising approach will help us deliver more medicines to fight other cancers in the future," Barron said in a statement.

Report: Israel informed Australia when Zygier was arrested

(JTA) -- Israeli intelligence services notified Australian officials of Ben Zygier?s arrest immediately after he was detained, an Australian news agency reported. ?

Australia?s Fairfax Media quoted a ?well-placed source familiar with the case? as saying Israeli intelligence had told Australian officials about the 2010 arrest of Zygier, a dual Australian-Israeli citizen dubbed Prisoner X who committed suicide later that year while in prison in Israel. Zygier is alleged to have worked with the Mossad.

Fairfax Media's former Middle East correspondent, Jason Koutsoukis, said he had been tipped off by an ''Australian intelligence source'' in October 2009 about concerns that Zygier may have been facilitating the use of Australian passports by Israeli spies. He then interviewed Zygier, who denied the allegation. A week after their last conversation, Zygier was imprisoned.

Razer Nostromo

Keyboards are great for typing, but when it comes to gaming, there's one fact that's hard to ignore: Even the best gaming keyboard is made to be a keyboard first, and a gaming device second. Unlike the sculpted ergonomics of gaming mice and gamepads, the keyboard wasn't made with gamers in mind. Gaming keypads like the Razer Nostromo, however, put all of your keyboard controls into a purpose-built gaming device, placing all of your commands at your fingertips, and offering a level of comfort and control standard keyboards can't match. Sure, you may not be able to write a novel with it, or even a tweet, but it will definitely give you an edge in competition.

Design and Features
The Nostromo was designed with two primary goals: First, to put all of your gaming commands literally at your fingertips, in a device with more customizability than a keyboard. Second, it was designed to offer superior comfort. Anyone who has played a PC game for more than an hour has wanted something with more support, and more flexibility in positioning. Because the Nostromo gameboard is a smaller, separate device, it can be positioned at an angle, shifted around the desk, and has a molded wrist rest that eliminates nearly all of the strain experienced at a regular keyboard.

The Nostromo measures 2.3 by 7.2 by 6.3 inches (HWD) with three distinct parts: A molded wrist rest, a keypad that sets under the fingers, and a few thumb controls. The Nostromo has 16 buttons total: 14 finger buttons, 2 thumb buttons, index finger scroll wheel, and a 8-way thumb joystick. The 8-way thumb joystick has a wide flat head, making it more of a raised thumbpad, considerably larger than the peg-like design seen on the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard. Below the raised thumbpad is an easy to recognize D-pad design.

The Nostromo is made from glossy black plastic, with a rubberized soft-touch coat on the wrist rest and blue LED backlight glowing behind the keys and through the semi-translucent scroll wheel. The keys are all programmable, but by default, the Nostromo puts WASD controls right where they should be, along with all of the other surrounding keys, Space and Alt mapped to the two thumb buttons.

The two thumb buttons?one above and one below the joystick?are quite well positioned, but the lower button, which is mapped to the space bar by default, requires significant amount of travel to register. While it's something you can get used to, it will likely slow you down. Both the Logitech G13 and the Razer Orbweaver utilize light-click buttons that eliminate this problem.

The Nostromo, with its numerous keys and functions, is too complex to be a simple plug-and-play device, so you'll need to install Razer's Nostromo Configurator software. The Nostromo pre-dates Razer Synapse 2.0, so even if you have other Razer devices, you'll still need to install this. Once in the dashboard, the Nostromo's many keys and functions can all be programmed, with four different custom keymaps you can set and cycle through.

But while the buttons can be customized through the dashboard, there's little adjustment available to the device itself. The ergonomic design, carefully placed keys, and thumb-friendly joystick are positioned such that the average hand will find it comfortable, but smaller or larger hands will not. The molded palmrest is, in fact, adjustable, but comes with its own issues.

The two-position palmrest would be a welcome feature?if it worked properly. The palmrest can indeed be adjusted, but the process, which involves pulling off the palmrest, legitimately feels like you're trying to break it. What's even worse, the piece has to be pulled in a specific direction to come off, making it that much easier to break if you're pulling it at the wrong angle.

Performance
I tested the Nostromo using one of the most keyboard intensive games I know, Mirror's Edge. It may be a few years old, but the nature of the gameplay is such that an intuitive layout is essential. Whether I was running, shimmying, jumping, or vaulting, the controls proved more intuitive than standard keyboard inputs, and the layout of the programmable buttons was quite comfortable.

Often, when using a regular keyboard, you can get hung up trying to reach Alt and Shift keys. The thoughtful design of the Nostromo removed these difficulties, even as I performed complicated combinations, like a wall run cross jump. The thumb button, however, is set a bit too far back, hitting my thumb slightly behind the first knuckle. This, combined with the button action issues mentioned earlier, were the only significant problems I had while using the Nostromo.

The Razer Nostromo is a solid gaming keypad, easily offering a more comfortable and more customizable alternative to traditional gaming keyboards, even when compared to top performaers, like the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90. While the overall product is quite good, and will improve in-game control with very little learning curve, it's not without its faults. Compared to the Logitech G13, the Nostromo has a fairly limited selection of controls, while Razer's newer gameboard, the Orbweaver, improves on almost every aspect of the Nostromo. Despite this, it's still a great product, and definitely one we can recommend to anyone that wants to step up their game.

OTTAWA ? Could lasers be the answer to roadside bombs?

That?s what the Canadian Forces wants to know.

The military is looking at mounting high-powered lasers on armoured vehicles to protect soldiers from improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

The Canadian Forces would put lasers on its fleet of Cougar armoured vehicles to blast apart bombs from a safe distance.

Improvised explosive devices proved a deadly threat when Canadian troops were stationed in southern Afghanistan.

Dozens of soldiers died in IED blasts during the combat mission, which ended in 2011.

Why sourdough bread resists mold

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Sourdough bread resists mold, unlike conventionally leavened bread. Now Michael Gaenzle and colleagues of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, show why. During sourdough production, bacteria convert the linoleic acid in bread flour to a compound that has powerful antifungal activity. The research, which could improve the taste of bread, is published online ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

The major benefits from the research are twofold: better tasting bread, says Gaenzle, because "preservatives can be eliminated from the recipes, and because sourdough bread has a more distinct and richer flavor compared to bread produced with yeast only;" and novel tools to control fungi in malting and plant production, via treatment of seeds with the anti-fungal fatty acids.

Genuine sourdough bread differs from ordinary bread in having an extra fermentation step, over and above yeast fermentation. This step is mediated by lactic acid bacteria, typically of the genus Lactobacillus, says Gaenzle.

In the study, "we offered linoleic acid to lactobacilli and screened for organisms producing potent antifungal activity," says Gaenzle. The investigators then fractionated the metabolites to isolate and identify compounds with antifungal activity. "The identification was a bottleneck in the research project," says Gaenzle. "In collaboration with analytical chemists, we had to develop novel methods for identifying the compounds."

L. hammesii produced substantial quantities of hydroxylated monounsaturated fatty acids which the researchers found strongly inhibited mold formation. A second antifungal fatty acid produced by cereal enzymes contributes to the antifungal activity of sourdough.

"The two compounds and their formation by cereal or microbial enzymes had been described previously, but their antifungal activity and their generation in food production was unknown," says Gaenzle. These new findings, he says, were "a step towards understanding how and why lactobacilli metabolize fatty acids. This could be useful in the long term to improve our understanding of the biology of these organisms."
