Synthetic magnetism used to control light: Opens door to nanoscale applications that use light instead of electricity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Stanford researchers in physics and engineering have demonstrated a device that produces a synthetic magnetism to exert virtual force on photons similar to the effect of magnets on electrons. The advance could yield a new class of nanoscale applications that use light instead of electricity.

Magnetically speaking, photons are the mavericks of the engineering world. Lacking electrical charge, they are free to run even in the most intense magnetic fields. But all that may soon change. In a paper published in Nature Photonics, an interdisciplinary team from Stanford University reports that it has created a device that tames the flow of photons with synthetic magnetism.

The process breaks a key law of physics known as the time-reversal symmetry of light and could yield an entirely new class of devices that use light instead of electricity for applications ranging from accelerators and microscopes to speedier on-chip communications.

"This is a fundamentally new way to manipulate light flow. It presents a richness of photon control not seen before," said Shanhui Fan, a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford and senior author of the study.

A Departure

The ability to use magnetic fields to redirect electrons is a founding principle of electronics, but a corollary for photons had not previously existed. When an electron approaches a magnetic field, it meets resistance and opts to follow the path of least effort, travelling in circular motion around the field. Similarly, this new device sends photons in a circular motion around the synthetic magnetic field.

The Stanford solution capitalizes on recent research into photonic crystals -- materials that can confine and release photons. To fashion their device, the team members created a grid of tiny cavities etched in silicon, forming the photonic crystal. By precisely applying electric current to the grid they can control -- or "harmonically tune," as the researchers say -- the photonic crystal to synthesize magnetism and exert virtual force upon photons. The researchers refer to the synthetic magnetism as an effective magnetic field.

The researchers reported that they were able to alter the radius of a photon's trajectory by varying the electrical current applied to the photonic crystal and by manipulating the speed of the photons as they enter the system. This dual mechanism provides a great degree of precision control over the photons' path, allowing the researchers to steer the light wherever they like.

Broken Laws

In fashioning their device, the team has broken what is known in physics as the time-reversal symmetry of light. Breaking time-reversal symmetry in essence introduces a charge on the photons that reacts to the effective magnetic field the way an electron would to a real magnetic field.

For engineers, it means that a photon travelling forward will have different properties than when it is traveling backward, the researchers said, and this yields promising technical possibilities. "The breaking of time-reversal symmetry is crucial as it opens up novel ways to control light. We can, for instance, completely prevent light from traveling backward to eliminate reflection," said Fan.

The new device, therefore, solves at least one major drawback of current photonic systems that use fiber optic cables. Photons tend to reverse course in such systems, causing a form of reflective noise known as backscatter.

"Despite their smooth appearance, glass fibers are, photonically speaking, quite rough. This causes a certain amount of backscatter, which degrades performance," said Kejie Fang, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Physics at Stanford and the first author of the study.

In essence, once a photon enters the new device it cannot go back. This quality, the researchers believe, will be key to future applications of the technology as it eliminates disorders such as signal loss common to fiber optics and other light-control mechanisms.

"Our system is a clear direction toward demonstrating on-chip applications of a new type of light-based communication device that solves a number of existing challenges," said Zongfu Yu, a post-doctoral researcher in Shanhui Fan's lab and co-author of the paper. "We're excited to see where it leads."

Iran bans export of 50 goods as sanctions bite: report

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran banned the export of around 50 basic goods, its media said on Tuesday, as the country takes steps to preserve supplies of essential items in the face of tightening Western sanctions.

The Islamic Republic is under intense financial pressure from U.S. and European trade restrictions imposed over its disputed nuclear programme.

The bans have led to a sharp drop over the past year in its oil exports, a major source of hard currency earnings and revenues for the government.

The Iranian rial currency has also plunged over fears the central bank will not be able to defend its value, making imports more difficult and more expensive.

Iranian traders will no longer be able to export goods including wheat, flour, sugar, and red meat, as well as aluminium and steel ingots, according to a letter from Deputy Industry Minister Seyyed Javad Taghavi published in Iranian media on Tuesday.

The letter also said a further list of banned goods would be announced later.

The Mehr news agency said the ban includes the re-exportation of some goods imported with government-subsidised dollars.

The Iranian government provides dollars at a rate of 12,260 rials each for specified priority goods. On the open market, dollars cost around 32,000 rials.

Many of Iran's basic imports are transported by sea via container ships.

Food and consumer items are not targeted by sanctions but a growing number of Western shipping companies, are pulling back from trade with Iran due to the complexities of deals, whilst also fearing losing business elsewhere.

This month shipping line Maersk said it was stopping port calls to the country.

According to the World Trade Organization, nearly 85 percent of all of Iran's exports in 2011 were fuels and mining products.

Manipulating Carb Intake to Build Muscle and Burn Fat | STACK

Carbs

In a perfect world, it would be easy to?simultaneously build muscle and lose fat, but can we really "have our cake and eat it too?" Depending on our individual goals, we might be asked by a coach to either bulk up or cut back. So where is the middle ground?

Bodybuilders seem to have no problem dropping ten percent of their body fat during the 12- to 16-week period leading up to a competition. Is this an illusion? To a degree, perhaps, but these athletes dial in on every component of fitness, from quantity of food to cardio and weight training, to achieve their goals.

What does this mean for the average person? With smart dieting, it is possible both to build muscle and burn fat. To build muscle, you need to time your carbohydrate intake around workouts; and to burn fat, you need to limit your insulin response during the rest of the day. There are a number of ways to do this,? including limiting carbs to pre- and post-workout meals. (Read?Building a Healthy Low-Carb Diet for Athletes.)

If you don't supply your body with the nutrients needed to fuel your workouts, your cardio and weight training can become catabolic, meaning it breaks down muscle. For example, say you lift weights at 4:00 p.m. Your first two meals of the day would be carb-free; then, an hour or so before your workout, you'd eat a complete meal of protein, fat and carbs. Following the workout, your meal would include more carbs; but any meals thereafter would consist of protein and healthy fats, with no carbs. (Learn about a different variation:?Carb Back-Loading: A Nutrition Hack for Supercharged Performance.)

This isn't an easy system to stick with, but if you're serious about getting fast results, it's worth a shot. Here is what a sample day would look like if you follow my suggestions:

  • Breakfast: omelet with three whole eggs, one cup egg whites and spinach
  • Lunch: extra lean beef, one tbsp. olive oil and serving of vegetables
  • Pre-workout: whey protein powder, oatmeal with one tbsp. almond butter
  • Post-workout: chicken with white rice
  • Dinner: cottage cheese with peanut butter

Intl observers critical of bias in Ukraine vote

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukraine's parliamentary election was marked by an uneven playing field and biased media coverage that reversed many of the democratic gains the country had made earlier, international observers said Monday.

With Ukraine's top opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, in jail, President Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions was poised to retain its control of parliament after Sunday's vote, according to exit polls and preliminary results.

Tymoshenko's party and two other opposition groups, however, made a strong showing and were planning to join forces to challenge Yanukovych's strong grip on power.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe criticized Ukraine for rolling back on democratic freedoms in the vote.

"Considering the abuse of power and the excessive role of money in this election, democratic progress appears to have reversed in Ukraine," said Walburga Habsburg Douglas, the special coordinator who led the OSCE election observation mission.

Observers cited Tymoshenko's absence from the election, the unfair use of government resources by the ruling party and tilted media coverage as the election's main problems.

With votes counted at over 50 percent of polling stations Monday, the Russia-friendly Party of Regions was ahead with 35 percent in the proportional share of the vote, while Tymoshenko's pro-Western party came in second with 22 percent. The Communists, Yanukovych's traditional allies, trailed with 15 percent.

Another pro-Western party called Udar (Punch) led by boxing champion Vitali Klitschko garnered 13 percent and the far-right Svoboda (Freedom) party had 8 percent of the vote.

The West was paying close attention to the vote in the strategic ex-Soviet state of 45 million people, which lies between Russia and the European Union and serves as a key transit nation for Russian energy supplies to many EU countries. An unfair election could lead to a further freeze in Kiev's ties with the West and push it closer to Moscow.

The Party of Regions was also to win more than half of the 225 total seats allocated in individual races, according to early results, meaning the president's team was likely to get a majority of votes in the 450-member parliament.

"This will enable us to form a majority and quickly start implementing the reforms that we started," Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Tigipko told The Associated Press.

Yanukovych's party strongly benefited from an electoral change it pushed through last year. Under the new law, the strictly proportional electoral system has been changed into a mixed one, in which half of parliament's seats are elected based on party lists and the other half in individual races.

Yanukovych's candidates are stronger in those individual races since the opposition was fielding multiple candidates and the ruling party enjoying greater access to government funds.

However, with Yanukovych under fire over Tymoshenko's imprisonment, rampant corruption, slow reforms and a stagnant economy, the opposition made a strong showing in the proportional vote.

"This clearly shows that the people of Ukraine support the opposition, not the government," Tymoshenko ally Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko said Yanukovych's party will likely retain control over parliament but will face a strengthened opposition.

"The Party of Region won by the number of points, but the opposition scored a moral victory," Fesenko said. "The monopoly on power will be harder to maintain."

The showing of the far-right Svoboda party, which had been expected to barely pass the 5 percent vote threshold, emerged as a big surprise.

Svoboda, which campaigns for the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture and strongly attacks Yanukovych, is also known for xenophobic and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Analysts said the party's popularity was due more to many Ukrainians' anger with the ruling party than vehemently nationalist views.

Cooking Christmas Dinner - Best Internet Offers and Tips

Christmas dinner is the highlight of the Yuletide season. It is a chance for you to get together with loved ones; it is also a good excuse to deviate from your usual healthy diet.

But if you are like most people, you worry about how to survive Christmas dinner preparation every season. It doesn?t have to be rocket science, though. Simplify your life by following these tips:

Before Christmas dinner

You should start thinking about your Christmas dinner plans at least a couple of weeks prior to the date. Sit down with your family and make a tentative dinner menu. This way, you?ll know what kind of food your family prefers for that special night.

Make a list of all the ingredients and supplies you will need for the dinner. Include not only food and drinks but also items for the table setting and the decorations for the dining area.

If you are planning to order any items, such as ham or cake, better reserve it a few days early to avoid the last-minute rush.

A potluck is always a great idea because it saves you cooking time and effort (and cash). Just make sure you discuss the menu thoroughly with family members and guests so as not to have double-ups.

While turkey and goose have traditionally graced the Christmas dinner table, you may also consider other alternatives, especially if you?ve been serving the same fare year after year.

How about glazed ham with pineapple and cherries? Roast beef and lamb are also good alternatives for smaller groups. For a healthier meal, try putting up a salad bar or a cook-your-own-barbecue hibachi grill.

During dinner

Place food items in strategic positions on the table, preferably grouping them according to food type ? appetizers, main courses, sidings, and desserts. Use a buffet style to save on space.

If the table is long, consider placing two of the same dishes at opposite ends for the convenience of the guests. Keep ice, wine, and other beverages in a large chiller bin, which should be positioned within easy reach.

Designate a small table to contain all the utensils ? napkins, forks, knives, cups, straws, and condiments. You can inform your guests about the setup so that they don?t have to keep asking you.

Disposable plates and utensils are ideal, to minimize after-dinner cleanups, leaving you with more quality time to spend with your guests.

Make sure you have a large trash bag or bin where guests can throw out used paper cups and plates.

After dinner

Washing the dishes can be fast and fun if you get your family to help, by packaging the chore as another chance to spend quality time together as a family during the holidays. If you don?t have a dishwasher, assign different people to clear up and pre-rinse the flatware, soap, rinse, dry, and store.

Got stains on your tablecloth? Just rub the area with a mixture of dishwashing detergent and water, or lemon juice and warm water, to remove the stain.

Any food droppings on the carpet can be removed by hand. As soon as possible (probably the next day), rub the area with a solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water, rinse out, and blot dry.

For stubborn stains, use a mixture of ammonia and warm water (for regular carpets only). Scrub till the stain is removed, then rinse and blot dry. With the right help and know-how, post-Christmas house cleaning can be easy ? maybe even easier than the holiday itself.

Why Is Hurricane Sandy So Big?

By tomorrow night (Oct. 29) or Tuesday, winds and clouds from Hurricane Sandy could stretch across the eastern third of the United States, according to weather predictions from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Sandy currently has hurricane-force winds extending up to 175 miles (280 kilometers) from its center, and tropical storm-force winds out to 520 miles (835 km), according to the NHC. That's second only to 2001's Olga in terms of the size of wind field of a storm. (Olga's winds extended out 600 miles (965 kilometers).

How did this Frankenstorm get so big?

Tropical transition

The main reason is that Sandy is morphing from a tropical cyclone to an extra-tropical cyclone, said Chris Davis, a scientist with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. Extra-tropical cyclones, or those outside the tropics, tend to be significantly larger than tropical ones. Although Sandy is huge, its size is not unprecedented, he said. What's more unusual is the location and timing?nor'easters can get this big, but usually occur in the winter, he said.

Hurricane Sandy began as a tropical cyclone, fueled by warm water, warm, moist air and the convection these phenomena can create, Davis told OurAmazingPlanet. These hurricanes can be likened to heat engines, transferring heat from the surface of the ocean to higher in the atmosphere. ?By contrast, extra-tropical cyclones are driven by a difference in temperatures over a wide area? cold air to the northwest, warm air to the southeast, which then swirls together, Davis said. This process is most efficient over huge distances, said.?

Sandy is progressing into an extra-tropical cyclone as it gets farther north, and tapping into the power of the jet stream, which ferries air from west to east over North America. The jet stream, like the storm itself, is powered by this temperature difference between air masses, he said.

Hurricane origins

While Sandy still retains the warm core of a tropical hurricane, it's also deriving power from the movement of warm air to the north and cold air to the south, similar in some respects to the Perfect Storm of 1991.

"It's an interesting case where both these processes are going on," Davis said.

Sandy started out as a large hurricane, but not unusually large. Although it's still unclear exactly what determines the size of hurricanes, it partially has to do with the amount of moist air found in the location where the cyclone is born, he said. In Sandy's case, there was ample warm, moist air in the western Caribbean, allowing it to become big.

"As a whole, we (the tropical storms community) don't know a lot about what controls tropical storm size," wrote Clark Evans, a scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in an email. "We know that storms that form from smaller disturbances tend to be smaller; we also know that storms that form in drier environments tend to be smaller."

3 parties vie for victory in Lithuania vote

(AP) ? Lithuanians will cast ballots in the second-round of national elections Sunday in a tight race that could ultimately determine how quickly the small Baltic nation introduces the euro and whether it will build a new nuclear power plant.

Three parties across the political spectrum are hoping to emerge the winner following a close race in the first round two weeks ago. Opposition center-left parties that finished in first and second place have pledged to form a coalition that would increase social spending and postpone introducing the euro, while the ruling conservatives, who came in third, want to see Lithuania phase in the common currency in 2014 and proceed with plans to build a nuclear power plant, a plan the opposition has criticized.

The country of 3 million people saw one of Europe's worst recessions and data show that, despite economic growth, living standards continue to decline due to soaring energy costs.

Nearly half of parliament's 141 seats are up for grabs in Sunday's run-off races. After the first round on Oct 14, the populist Labor Party, founded by a Russia-born millionaire, is in front with 18 seats ? compared with 16 for its Social Democrat allies and 13 for its rival conservatives from Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats.

The Labor Party and the Social Democrats, both in the current opposition, have agreed to form a coalition with another populist group, Order and Justice, which finished fifth with six seats. All three parties campaigned on higher wages and benefits and vowed to put off the euro until the European Union can resolve the three-year old economic crisis.

However, the ruling conservatives, led by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, could pull off an upset. The party has 35 candidates in second round ballots and leads in many of them.

If the Homeland Union were to end up with the most seats, they would likely get the nod from President Dalia Grybauskaite to form the next government, though analysts say a second-place finish might also be enough to keep Kubilius in the driver's seat.

"If Homeland Union finishes second after the run-off, this would be a major blow not only to the Labor Party but also the emerging three-party coalition. It would immediately weaken their positions in the new Parliament," said Vladimiras Laucius, a political analyst at the Delfi news portal.

President Grybauskaite openly supports the ruling coalition and has expressed doubts about the integrity of Viktor Uspaskich, the Russia-born Labor leader. A member of the European Parliament, Uspaskich is under investigation in Lithuania for allegedly fraudulent party finance. In 2006 he was forced to resign as economy minister for a conflict-of-interest case with Russia and suspicions about a faked diploma from a Moscow-based institute.

Still, the Laborites and Social Democrats are in a good position to consolidate their lead. The Labor Party has 35 candidates in Sunday's run-off races, with the Social Democrats have 27.

Lithuania shut down its Soviet-era nuclear power plant in 2009, forcing the country's to import more gas and electricity from Russia at a steep price. The country's current leadership wants to build a new nuclear plant to ensure energy independence, but nearly two-thirds of voters rejected the idea in a non-binding referendum two weeks ago.

Project opponents claim the plant, which would be built by Japan's Hitachi, is too expensive and uses unsafe technology.

Strategy questions to dominate Fiat quarterly results

MILAN (Reuters) - Fiat is struggling to balance the demands of unions worried about Italian jobs and factories with the task of reassuring investors it is tackling profit-sapping excess production capacity.

The Italian carmaker is preparing to present third-quarter results and has pledged to give a strategy update on October 30, just days after a perfect storm of plant closures, plunging profit and a state bailout rocked Europe's automotive industry.

Europe's debt crisis, government spending cuts and high unemployment have hit consumer budgets and sent demand plunging, with new car registrations in the region showing their sharpest contraction in 12 months in September.

Fiat's results come after Ford said it would shut plants in Belgium and Britain, with the loss of thousands of jobs, PSA Peugeot Citroen accepted state aid and even Volkswagen , previously more crisis-proof than its mass-market rivals, posted a big quarterly profit drop.

The Turin-based maker of the compact Punto and 500 models, which also controls U.S. automaker Chrysler, said on July 31 that it would update targets when it presented third-quarter results to reflect slower European sales.

Full-year net profit is seen at 1.29 billion euros ($1.67 billion), at the lower end of its target of between 1.2 billion and 1.5 billion, a consensus of up to 20 analysts compiled by Fiat showed.

GROWING CRITICISM

But investors intent on looking beyond the numbers for longer-term answers on Fiat's industrial plans may be disappointed as the uncertain market outlook is likely to stop Fiat from providing an update on five-year plans for fear its predictions may not come true.

The company denied a press report last week it would present a so-called 'Marchionne plan', named after chief executive Sergio Marchionne, to produce Chrysler and Jeep models at its five Italian plants on October 30.

"If Marchionne is not unfreezing the investments for future car launches, we need to know what he is doing," said an analyst who rates Fiat a 'sell'. "We'd also like to know what other solutions he is looking at to deal with overcapacity."

Many equity analysts have already cut the stock and Moody's downgraded Fiat a notch to Ba3 in October. The ratings agency sees European light vehicle sales falling eight percent this year, and three percent in 2013.

"We feel there is substantially more downside risk on Fiat's European operations than upside risk on its North American business," wrote Societe Generale, rating Fiat a 'sell'.

Fiat is exactly halfway through a 2010-2014 business plan released in April 2010, when it was forecasting a recovery in the European car market.

The plan, which is no longer a reference point for investors or the company, envisioned spending 16 billion euros in Italy on new car models and more than doubling EBITDA to nearly 15 billion, a target that was later cut.

Fiat cut its 2012 forecasts earlier this year, and never adjusted the rest of the plan, except to put its Italian investment plan on hold - sparking a firestorm of criticism in Italy that has grown in intensity in recent weeks despite Fiat's reassurances it does not plan to shut plants.

Instead of running at full capacity as forecast back in 2010, production at Fiat's plants has been halted for most of the autumn.

The carmaker is likely to keep its goal for total 2013 investments flat at 7.5 billion euros, said a person familiar with the situation.

This is not going to go down well with Italian unions, which have long complained about a lack of investments at home.

"Fiat has delayed its investments in Italy for two years," said Flavia Aiello, who represents workers at Fiat's flagship Mirafiori factory in Turin. "We did our share. The company now has to make the move."

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida have found that men with prostate cancer who receive androgen deprivation therapy may predictably suffer from fatigue if they have single nucleotide polymorphisms in three pro-inflammatory genes. The discovery highlights the importance of personalized medicine, in which therapies are tailored to a patient's genetic profile.

The study appears in the October issue of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

"Few studies have examined the role of genes in cancer-related fatigue and none, to our knowledge, have examined genetic variation related to androgen deprivation therapy," said study co-principal investigator Heather S.L. Jim, Ph.D., assistant member of the Health Outcomes and Behavior Program. "We found that prostate cancer patients who carry the variants of the IL6 and TNFA genes and are treated with androgen deprivation therapy are susceptible to heightened fatigue."

Evidence from prostate cancer studies suggests that pro-inflammatory cytokines, which have been linked to fatigue in cancer patients, are influenced by testosterone. At the same time, testosterone inhibits IL6 gene expression. Androgen deprivation therapy restricts testosterone.

"The goal of our study was to examine whether single nucleotide polymorphisms in genes that regulate pro-inflammatory cytokines can predict changes in fatigue in men receiving androgen deprivation therapy," said co-principal investigator Paul B. Jacobsen, Ph.D., associate center director for Cancer Prevention & Control at Moffitt. "We hypothesized that patients displaying variants at these sites would display greater increases in fatigue following initiation of androgen deprivation therapy."

The researchers found that patients with a greater number of variants reported greater increases in fatigue and of longer duration.

"It is still unclear why IL6 and TNFA genotypes affected some aspects of fatigue but not others," Jim said. "While the single nucleotide polymorphisms found in our study were located in predicted transcription factor binding sites that regulate gene expression, a single gene can have many regulatory sites scattered across the genome."

The authors speculated that new single nucleotide polymorphisms may be uncovered that will help to clarify the mechanisms of inflammatory gene transcription as they relate to fatigue in cancer patients. Preliminary findings from this study "represent an important first step in identifying genetic variation as a predictor of fatigue secondary to androgen deprivation therapy," the researchers concluded.

"Early identification of patients with genetic risk factors can enable clinicians to provide timely interventions, behavioral or pharmacologic, to prevent or reduce fatigue," Jacobsen said. "This goal is consistent with personalized cancer treatment tailored to individual gene profiles to maximize benefit and minimize side effects."

Jailers worry about dental floss as a weapon

(AP) ? Dental floss may prevent toothaches, but it's given jailers plenty of headaches.

When a group of New York prisoners sued last month to demand access to dental floss, officials said they had to consider "security issues." As it turns out, jail ? and jailbreak ? history is tightly tangled with the stringy decay fighter.

In Texas, officials believe a prisoner used floss to cut his way out of his cell, then jumped a fellow inmate and knifed him to death.

In Maryland, Illinois, West Virginia and Wisconsin, inmates collected enough floss to braid it into ropes and escape, or try to, over prison walls.

A group of escaped prisoners on the run in Texas used floss to sew up their gunshot wounds.

And a man in an Illinois jail used floss to stitch together the dummy he left in his bed when he took off.

Experts say floss, or the plastic holder it sometimes comes in, has been used to strangle enemies, to escape, to saw through bars, to pick handcuffs, to make a hand grip on a shank and to hoist contraband from one level of cells to another.

"These inmates can make a weapon out of a chewing gum wrapper," said Steven Kayser, whose company sells a floss product advertised as prison-safe. "Floss is right up there on the danger list."

Officials at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla were somewhat leery when 11 inmates, acting without a lawyer, filed a $500 million lawsuit demanding access to dental floss.

Lead plaintiff Santiago Gomez said the jail was "violating inmates' federally protected civil rights by not allowing inmates access to dental floss, while acknowledging that it will result in cavities if you fail to floss your teeth."

He said the inmates had been brushing three times a day, "tongue and gums included," but were still getting cavities, bleeding gums, enduring constant tooth drilling and mental anguish.

Deputy Commissioner Justin Pruyne said the jail is not required to supply floss to inmates and said floss posed security concerns. But the jail has since brought in a supply of Kayser's "Floss Loops" ? circles of rubbery floss with no hard plastic that are designed to break easily before they can be used as a weapon.

It's not clear if that has satisfied the prisoners. The lawsuit has not been dropped.

An episode of the science TV show "Mythbusters" a few years ago set up an experiment to challenge the floss-as-security-risk theory. The show used a floss-equipped robot to test whether floss ? combined with toothpaste to make it more abrasive ? could really saw through a bar on a jail cell.

The feat was declared "plausible," given 300 days at eight hours a day ? the kind of time that an inmate might have.

Regulations of prison floss vary around the country.

In northeastern Texas, officials believe Antonio Lara used dental floss and toothpaste to saw his way out of a cell at a county jail and kill a gang rival in 2000.

"We do not carry traditional dental floss because of security concerns," said Jason Clark, spokesman for the Coffield Unit near Palestine, Texas. "Floss can be used to make ropes, weapons, cut through bars, even just reinforce the grip on a shank."

Instead, inmates are allowed plastic holders with a small piece of floss stretched across, he said.

In California, the state approves Floss Loops. Regular floss can be used as a garrote, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

"But for that matter, you can pull thread from your socks or bed linens to choke someone. It's not just razor blades and toothbrush shanks in prison. We've seen underwear used as a weapon."

New York's state prison system permits dental floss, but only the unwaxed variety. The waxed is "much stronger," said spokesman Peter Cutler. He said prison security officials have banned it after having "experience" with the waxed variety. He would not elaborate.

The Westchester jail does ban toothpicks and water picks; inmates are allowed to have a 3-inch-long toothbrush, Pruyne said. Kayser said he also makes a "rubber-type" flexible toothbrush that's 4 ? inches long, but said anything longer could be fashioned into a weapon.

It was waxed floss that was used in Wisconsin in 1997 by inmates Timothy Dummer and Guy Dunwald. They used ropes of braided floss to get over a wall at the Green Bay Correctional Institution. They were quickly recaptured and had five years added to their sentences.

A television story about the episode said the prisoners had collected 18,975 feet ? more than 3? miles ? of dental floss.

In 1994, Robert Shepard used a floss rope braided as a telephone cord to scale an 18-foot wall at the South Central Regional Jail in West Virginia. He was on the lam for about five weeks. He was already being disciplined for scraping away the mortar between bricks in his cell.

In 1991, three inmates bought hundreds of yards of dental floss from the store at the Hays County Jail in Illinois and turned it into a ladder of sorts.

"It was ingenious," said U.S. Attorney Gerald Carruth when the men pleaded guilty to attempted escape. "They made the rope out of dental floss and used cardboard salt-and-pepper containers for stirrups on the ladder. ... That dental floss is strong."
