Ecommerce 101: What Type of Ecommerce Model is Right for You ...

Do you have dreams of being a successful Internet entrepreneur? If so, then you should be pleased to know that there are a multitude of opportunities out there, just waiting for someone with the initiative and perseverance to run with them. The first step to online success is finding a niche that is a good fit. What type of ecommerce is right for you? Consider the following:

Type of goods sold versus customer type. Ecommerce businesses can be organized into two different categories ? goods sold and customer type. As you will see below, each of these categories may be broken up into subcategories, and then almost any goods sold/customer type subcategory combination may make a successful ecommerce business, if you see it through to fruition. Explore the options detailed below to find a combination that suits your strengths, resources, and preferences.

Goods sold. This is simple: What type of goods do you want to sell through your ecommerce site? You may choose to work with physical products, digital products, or services. Physical products are those that you package and mail away to your customers; they might include things like electronics, furniture, office supplies, and hard cover/paperback books. Digital products are transferable through the Internet and generally include things of an intellectual property nature; they include things like ebooks, software, website subscriptions, and MP3s. Services include anything that involves action, such as consulting, giving referrals, brokering, etc.

Customer type. Generally speaking, you may choose to cater to either private individuals or businesses. If you choose to offer goods only to other businesses, then you would be considered a Business to Business (B2B) site. If you choose to offer goods to private party end consumers, then you would be a Business to Consumer (B2C) site. There are also Consumer to Business (C2B) sites, in which consumers originated job orders and the ecommerce site bids to fill them, as well as Consumer to Consumer (C2C) sites, in which consumers conduct business amongst themselves by way of an ecommerce platform (eBay is a prime example of this type of business model). Other variations involve government entities: Business to Government (B2G), Government to Business (G2B), Government to Government (G2G), Government to Citizen (G2C), Government to Employee (G2E), and more.

As you can see, you have many choices when it comes to building your ecommerce business model. Consider all of these options before you sit down to write your business plan. You may find that your greatest chances of success lie in one specific combination, or you may find that you can best reach your business goals by creating a custom lineup.
