SAfrica's alliance blames mining companies

(AP) ? The African National Congress and its governing partners in South Africa are accusing mining companies of stirring up union rivalries at the heart of a violent strike that led police to kill 34 striking miners.

A statement from the ANC, the South African Communist Party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions says various companies were "fanning up conflict between the unions and thus, conflict amongst the workers themselves."

The outcry over the Aug. 16 police shootings has highlighted divisions within the ANC and between the alliance partners in the run-up to a December ANC congress that will decide the future of South African President Jacob Zuma.

The strike at Lonmin platinum mine entered its fourth week Friday with some workers holding out for higher salaries and threatening colleagues who want to work.
